The robots were initially launched in 2016 and they are being tried in some areas around London including Greenwich and Milton Keynes. It is reported that 1,000 deliveries had taken place in London before Christmas.

If a restaurant gets an order from Just Eat, it can choose the option of requesting a robot delivery. The robot will then travel by itself to the restaurant from a local depot while the meal is being prepared.


The robots are designed and manufactured by Starship Technologies. The company was established by the co-founders of Skype in 2014. The robots can deliver packages and goods as well as food to consumers within a short diameter of their original location.


The robots can travel along the pavement on six wheels. They are to start delivering pizzas within one mile of the Domino's outlets in some German and Dutch cities. Domino's has established a Domino's Robotic Unit (DRU) to perform testing.

More than 60,000 hungry Buckeyes will be able to order their favorite foods from on-campus dining locations via the Grubhub app and have them delivered by one of 50 Yandex robots operating at the OSU campus in a fast and cost-effective way. Since late 2019, the company has also been developing its own delivery robots. Based on the same self-driving technology as its autonomous vehicles, these rovers are built to deliver small and medium-sized packages. Yandex robots are already delivering orders from shops and restaurants to customers in Russia and the United States.


In addition to university campuses, Starship also delivers groceries and packages in local neighborhoods and a range of items on corporate campuses around the globe. The company has also played a role in helping to bring legislation allowing delivery robots to operate on sidewalks across nine U.S. states, including Wisconsin and several countries.

An intrepid food-delivery robot was rescued after it tried and failed to mount a kerb in Cherry Hinton in Cambridge on Monday (December 12). The robot, part of the recently deployed Starship delivery fleet, ran into a little bother on Monday afternoon, and ended up stuck up against the curb with its wheels spinning trying to get up.


Other users were confused as to why the robots had opted to mount the highest point of the curb, rather than the usually more manageable drop curb. The electric robots have been a popular addition to central Cambridge since they arrived in September.


They can carry up to two full grocery bags of shopping, making them perfect for shoppers who just need to buy the basics, like milk or bread. The popular, electric-powered robots move at pedestrian speed, around six kilometres an hour, and can navigate easily around objects and people - though curbs in the snow seem to have them stumped.

Some students say they are looking forward to using Ball State Dining as a form of payment for the deliveries. The students also included that they have seen first hand the difficulties these robots face during winter weather events.


Brandon Bender, a freshman at Ball State University, said that he has seen the robots wheels get stuck in the snow and unable to complete a delivery. During the winter storm last week dining was forced to pause orders for the day due to heavy snow, ice, and wind. Adkins mentioned that they work as fast as they can to implement the robots after severe weather.


Students are also raising concern on whether or not the university plans to expand the robots or remove them completely. Another student stated that she has never used the robots before but thinks they are a cute amenity to campus living.


Starship Technologies, which was created by Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis, owns the robots and is responsible for their maintenance and IT support. There is no cost to the university for the robots. Instead, a small delivery fee is added to orders.


Paterson said most people find the robots pretty adorable, with their rounded bodies and steady pace as they hurry around campus. The robots will be easy to spot around campus and he noted that their little warning flags are appropriately Beaver orange.


Currently, there are more than 2,210 students living in OSU residence halls on the Corvallis campus. Several COVID-specific safety measures are in place at this time, including no sit-down dining service in dining centers. All food is currently served in single-use, take-out containers and traffic flow has been adjusted to allow for six feet of distance between individuals. While express and pick-up options have been expanded this year, robot delivery also allows for less density in all OSU restaurant locations while still providing service to the greater campus community.

A fleet of 40 autonomous robots has been deployed on Arizona State University's Tempe campus, making it the latest institution to implement robot food-delivery from Starship Technologies, according to a university release.


Customers use the Starship Deliveries app to choose their food or drink items and then drop a pin on the map to designate where they want the robot to deliver their food, the release said. Using an interactive map, users can watch on their phones as the robot makes its journey. Customers receive an alert when the robots arrive and can then use the app to unlock the container and collect their order.


Because the delivery process is contactless, Ryan Tuohy, senior vice president of business development at Starship Technologies, said the robots can "keep students safe and make social distancing easier."


Starship robots use a combination of machine learning, artificial intelligence and on-board sensors to navigate sidewalks and avoid obstacles. According to the release, the computer vision-based navigation helps the robots to map their environment to the nearest inch, allowing the robots to cross streets, climb curbs, travel at night and operate in both rain and snow.


Robots can travel a brisk 4 miles per hour, but will slow down if they sense pedestrians, cars, bicycles or other moving objects. Each robot can travel a couple of hours until their batteries run down enough that they seek out a charging station on campus, Ben Hartley, Sodexo's director of campus dining at NAU, told The Arizona Republic in 2019. 2ff7e9595c
